Abstract

|
Although microorganisms are very diverse, their genomes are, generally, smaller in size and have less variants compared to higher organisms. The technological advances of next-generation sequencing enable the new approach to microbial genomics. Moreover, the rapidly accumulated genome data extended a broad range of microbial studies including their evolution, basic biological process, and epidemiological investigations. Since several countries have already recognized the value of microbial genomes, they have been supporting large projects in the field of microbial genomics for many years through a strong partnership with genomics companies and public research institutes. In this article, we introduced current research trends in microbial genomics and provided research directions for the future.
